2007 SJV HOMELESS
FAMILY SHELTER MEALS WEEK
Coming up October 8th to October 12th!
St. John Vianney church hosts dinners one week of
each year, for the families housed in the Martinez
Homeless Family Shelter. We are a part of the
Interfaith Coalition group of churches which
provides meals and supplies for the Martinez Family
Shelter, contracted through Shelter, Inc. SJV
provides daily evening meals, Monday through Friday,
for 35 people… residents, staff and meal volunteers.
Approximately 2/3 of the shelter residents are
children and 1/3 are parents.
Homeless Family Shelter Meals Week will be hosted by
St. John Vianney church 10/8/07 to 10/12/07 this
year.
Meals Week Volunteer Sign-Ups will be held at SJV
church, after all the masses, Sept 29/30.
Approximately 20 volunteers are needed daily for
cooking meal items, driving and serving the dinners
at the shelter during Meals Week. Cooks sign up to
prepare a specific menu item in the amount needed
for one of the daily meals. (For example…fruit Jello
for 15, chicken enchiladas for 15 or 2-dozen
cupcakes.) Servers and drivers sign up for a
specific day and time. An information sheet about
Meals Week is available at Sign-Ups and given to all
volunteers, which give the directions they need for
their service. Volunteers will be called within a
week after signing up, to confirm their service and
answer any questions they might have. Also, they
will receive another reminder call one day before
their scheduled service.
All prepared meal items are donated by SJV
parishioners. They are collected daily, Oct. 8 to 12
from 4- 4:30 PM at the SJV Rectory parking lot and
delivered to the Martinez Homeless Family Shelter
via car pool. Approximately 8 people serve the
dinner at 6 PM. We also provide lunch and breakfast
supplies; paper plates, napkins, and towels;
cleaning and laundry products; diapers; baby food;
fresh fruit, and other needed shelter supplies for
our week of meals.
